The video is part of a workshop embedded within Synthetic Anatomy; an interdisciplinary module run at Kings College London. It documents a practical workshop session devised and taught by artists Les Bicknell and Celia Pym. The aims of the sessions are to explore ways of seeing, interpreting, and communicating ideas visually. They are practical sessions where students develop reflective and imaginative skills. Historically the sessions have taken place in a physical classroom, this year they have been devised within COVID-19 restrictions and delivered over Zoom. The course is a collaboration between Biomedical Engineering and Anatomy. It sets out to explore innovative ways of approaching Anatomy, using the 3D printer as a new lens for exploring anatomical structures. The involvement of Arts practitioners is seen as an essential part of the successful design and implementation of Synthetic Anatomy. There are key lessons to be learned from Arts education in terms of ideas generation and risk-taking through sketchbook development and directed ‘play’, reflection and presentation through group crits and written portfolios. We would also incorporate the emphasis on the relationship between teacher and student as peers with a shared passion for their subject. This process-led, collaborative model also supports more creative approaches to results, encouraging learning from unexpected outcomes and valuing personal investment and teamwork.
